Investigation Underway Into In-Custody Death at Las Animas County Detention Center
The Las Animas County Coroner's Office is investigating the death of John Romero a 58-year-old male who experienced a medical emergency while in custody at the Las Animas County Detention Center on April 20, 2026.
Detention staff responded to the incident and requested emergency medical services. The
individual was transported to Mount San Rafael Hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.
An autopsy has been completed. The cause and manner of death remain pending completion of the investigation, including toxicology results. Preliminary examination has identified no evidence of traumatic injury.
As this death occurred while the individual was in custody, standard investigative procedures are being followed. The Coroner's Office is working in coordination with appropriate agencies.
